What does blood consist of?
55% Plasma 45% Red Blood cells <1% White blood cells and platelets
Structure of Red blood cells and it’s function?
Structure 1 : Biconcave Shape Function : increase surface area to volume ratios Structure 2 : haemoglobin Function : To be able to combine reversibly with oxygen Structure 3 : No nucleus Function : To make more space for haemoglobin so that it can carry more oxygen
Function of the Red blood cell
To transport oxygen to all parts of the body
Types of white blood cell and their functions
Type 1 : Lymphocytes Function : produce anti-bodies to neutralise foreign entities Type 2 : Phagocytes Function : engulfs and digest foreign entities
What are platelets?
They are not true cells but are membranes bound fragments of cytoplasm from bone marrow. They are needed for blood clotting as they contain clotting factors and enzymes.
What does plasma contain and it’s function?
90% Water 10% Proteins -Antibodies -Enzymes Dissolved substances -Salt -Glucose -Amino Acids Waste products -Carbon Dioxide -Urea Plasma transports all of the above^^
What are the blood types?
O : Universal Donor and receives from O only A : Receives from A and O and gives to A and AB B : Receives from B and O and gives to B and AB AB : Universal receiver but can only give to AB
What are Baby blood cells?
They are immature cells that are called stem cells. They constantly divide and produce new cells and are found in the bone marrow. They can become any type of cell and once they fully develop they will leave the bone marrow and enter the blood stream.
What is the procedure of blood clotting?
• Platelets in the blood form a platelet plug by sticking to each other at the wound site. • The damaged tissue and platelet plug will trigger a series of enzymatic reactions that forms a mesh that traps blood cells and bacteria • As blood solidifies, it forms a scab • The scab protects the underlying layers where new cells are being formed to replace the damaged cells
