• A muscle contraction of the right ventricle pushes the blood through the pulmonic valve and into the pulmonary artery • From the pulmonary artery to smaller arteries, arterioles, and capillaries • In the lung, alveoli, red blood cells exchange gasses: they pick up oxygen and release carbon dioxide through diffusion • The oxygenated blood flows throug capillaries to venules and through the pulmonary veins • The blood empties into the left atrium
