#1
Front (Question)

Waves transfer energy without transferring… They’re described as… about a fixed point

Back (Answer)

matter oscillations

#2
Front (Question)

What are transverse waves?

Back (Answer)

Waves where the points oscillate along its length to vibrate at 90 degrees to direction of energy transfer.

#3
Front (Question)

What are the properties of transverse waves?

Back (Answer)

• energy transfer perpendicular to wave motion • transfer energy but not particles • can move in solids, surface of liquids & vacuums

#4
Front (Question)

What are longitudinal waves?

Back (Answer)

Waves where the points along its length oscillate parallel to direction of energy transfer.

#5
Front (Question)

What are the properties of longitudinal waves?

Back (Answer)

• energy transfer in same direction as wave motion • transfer energy but not particles • can move in solids, liquids & gases, not in a vacuum

#6
Front (Question)

What’s the formula for frequency?

Back (Answer)

F = 1/t

#7
Front (Question)

What are the 2 formulas for wave speed?

Back (Answer)

S=D/T V = f x λ

#8
Front (Question)

What is the method for measuring waves?

Back (Answer)

• set up ripple tank • place paper under ripple tank to catch shadows • mark 2 lines on paper 15cm apart • record waves passing through over 5 seconds with slow mo camera + measure how long each λ is in m • calculate wave speed by recording time it takes 1 wave to pass 15cm • calculate frequency using v = f x λ

#9
Front (Question)

When waves move from one substance to another they may be…

Back (Answer)

transmitted absorbed reflected refracted

#10
Front (Question)

How does density affect the change of direction in refraction?

Back (Answer)

• less to more dense (light bends towards the normal) • more to less dense (light bends away from the normal) • when passing along normal light doesn’t bend at all

#11
Front (Question)

Why will waves have a change of speed in refraction?

Back (Answer)

When a wave hits a different medium the different parts of the wave enter at different times.
