Photosynthesis & Cellular Respiration

Photosynthesis is the process by which autotrophs use energy from the sun, carbon dioxide, and water to produce glucose and oxygen.

Cellular respiration is the process through which both autotrophs and heterotrophs break down glucose and other food molecules using oxygen and release energy, carbon dioxide, and water.

Stage 1 of photosynthesis occurs in the chloroplasts.

Water is split into hydrogen atoms and oxygen atoms.

The light energy enters the chlorophyll and is converted into chemical energy that is used in Stage 2.

Stage 2 of photosynthesis occurs in the chloroplasts.

Carbon dioxide enters the leaf from the air through the stomata and moves into the chloroplasts.

Using the energy from the sun captured in Stage 1, hydrogen and carbon dioxide undergo chemical reactions that produce sugars like glucose.

Oxygen gas exits the leaf through the stomata and enters the atmosphere.

6H2O + 6CO2 → C6H12O6 + 6O2

Stage 1 of cellular respiration occurs in the cytoplasm of a cell.

Enzymes in the cytoplasm break down glucose into smaller molecules. This stage DOES NOT use oxygen.

Stage 2 of cellular respiration occurs in the mitochondria.

The molecules from Stage 1 are broken down even further. This DOES require oxygen.

Energy (ATP) is produced and released to the cell.

Carbon dioxide and water are produced. The CO2 is released into the atmosphere.
