Colloid
Mixture consisting of tiny particles that are intermediate in size between those in solutions and those in suspensions - difference from a suspension is colloids particles are smaller than those in suspension
Emulsion
Any mixture of two or more immiscible liquids where one liquid is dispersed in the other
Solution
Homogeneous mixture of two or more substances uniformly spread through a single phase
Solute
Substance that dissolves in the solvent in a solution
Solvent
The substance that the solute dissolves in
Alloy
Solid or liquid mixture of two or more metals
Heterogeneous mixture
Can be separated
Decanting
Pouring one substance from one container to another without disturbing the sediment
Immiscible
Two substances that cannot mix into a homogeneous mixture
Tyndall effect
Light scattering by particles Ina colloid or else particles in a very fine suspension
Polar compound
Compound in which the electric charge isn’t symmetrically distributed - partial charge
Hydrogen bonding
Electrostatic attraction between polar groups
No polar compound
When the electronegatives of two atoms are equal
Solubility
Ability to dissolve in a solvent
Concentration
Abundance of a constituent divided by the total volume of a mixture.
Unsaturated solution
When a solution can have a solute added and dissolved
Saturated solution
No more solvent can be dissolved
Supersaturated solution
Solution that contains more solute than the solvent can dissolve
Molarity
Molar concentration
Insoluble
Impossible to dissolve
Soluble
Can dissolve
Dilute
Make thinner or weaker by adding water or another solvent to it
Suspension
Mixture in which particles of a material are more or less evenly distributed throughout a liquid or gas - particles settle out when the mixture is allowed to stand
