Functions of skeletal system
• forms framework to support muscle’s fat, and skin • surround vital organs to protect them • muscles attach to bones to help provide movement bones help produce red and white blood cells and platelets • store most of calcium supply of the body in addition to phosphorus and fats.
Diaphysis
long shaft bone
Epiphysis
two extremities or ends
Medullary canal
a cavity in the diaphysis filled w/ yellow marrow
Yellow marrow
storage area for fat cells, contains cells that form leukocytes or white blood cells
Red marrow
found in certain bones such as vertebrae, ribs, sternum, cranium and proximal ends of the humerus and femur; produces blood cells
Periostium
tough membrane covering outside of bone, contains blood vessels, lymph vessels, and osteoblasts (special cells that form new bone tissue). Necessary for bone growth repair, and nutrition.
Axial skeleton
section of skeletal system, forms the main trunk of the body, and is composed of the skull, spinal column, ribs, and breastbone.
Appendicular skeleton
forms the extremities and is composed of the shoulder girdle, arm bones, pelvic girdle, and leg bones
Cranium
spherical structure that surrounds and protects the brain, 8 bones
Fontanels
spaces called “soft spots,” allow for the enlargement of the skull as brain growth occurs, made of membrane & cartilage & turn into solid bone by 18 months of age. 14 facial bones
Sutures
areas where the cranial bones have joined together
Sinuses
air spaces in the bones of the skull that act as resonating chambers for the voice, lined w/ mucous membranes
Foranima
openings in bones that allow nerves & blood vessels to enter and leave the bone
Vertebrae
composed of 26 bones that protect the spinal cord and provide support for the head and trunk, include 7 cervical (neck), 12 thoracic (chest) , 5 lumbar (waist), 1 sacrum (back of pelvic girdle), and 1 coccyx (tailbone)
Sternum
Breastbone is the last bone of the axial skeleton, contains 3 parts: manubrium, gladiolus, and the xiphoid process
Clavicles
2 collarbones, makes up the shoulder (pectoral) or girdle
Scapulas
shoulder bones, provide for the attachment of the upper arm bones
Cervical vertebrae
part of the spinal column, 7 cervical (neck) bones
Thoracic vertebrae
part of the spinal column, 12 thoracic (chest) bones
Lumbar vertebrae
part of the spinal column, 5 lumber (waist) bones
Humerus
1 bone; upper part of the bone arm
Radius
1 bone; lower arm on thumb side that rotates around the ulna to allow the hand to turn freely.
Ulna
1 larger bone of lower arm w. a projection called the olecranon process at its upper end, forming the elbow
