What are the three different mechanisms in which heat travels from Earth’s interior?
Convection, Conduction and Radiation
What is Convection?
The transfer of heat by the mass movement or circulation of a substance This the dominant mode of heat transfer within Earth’s mantle and outer core
What is conduction?
The transfer of heat through matter by molecular activity It is done through the collisions of atoms or through the flow of electrons
What are the different modes of heat transfer in Earth’s Structure?
Inner core to Outer Core -> Conduction Outer Core to D layer -> Convection D-layer to lower mantle -> Conduction Mantle to Lithosphere ->Convection
What are mantle plumes?
A mass of hotter-than-typical mantle material that ascends toward the surface, where it may lead to igneous activity. These plumes of solid yet mobile material may originate as deep as the core-mantle boundary
What is the geotherm?
The gradual increase in temperature with depth in the crust of Earth
What is viscosity?
Resistance to flow
