Card preview (21)

#1
Front (Question)

What is differentiation?

Back (Answer)

Becoming different in the process of growth and development.

#2
Front (Question)

What is tissue?

Back (Answer)

Group of cells with the same structure and function.

#3
Front (Question)

What is meristematic tissue?

Back (Answer)

Tissue that is actively dividing to produce new cells and consists of small undifferentiated cells. Large nucleus, dense cytoplasm. Produce new cells and increase surface area of plant. Tip of root, tip of shoot.

#4
Front (Question)

What does apical mean?

Back (Answer)

The region of the tip or point of something.

#5
Front (Question)

What does lateral mean?

Back (Answer)

Towards the sides.

#6
Front (Question)

What is cambium?

Back (Answer)

Actively dividing tissue that increases the thickness of plants.

#7
Front (Question)

What is permanent tissue?

Back (Answer)

Tissues that are specialized in function and do not divide constantly.

#8
Front (Question)

What are the types of plant tissue?

Back (Answer)

Simple tissues: -Ground Tissue (Parenchyma, collenchyma and schlerenchyma) -Epidermal tissue (Epidermis, other root hairs, other trichomes and stomata) Compound tissue: -Vascular tissue (Phloem and Xylem)

#9
Front (Question)

What is epidermal tissue?

Back (Answer)

The outermost layer of cells that covers the roots, stem and leaves. It is tightly packed, had cuticle, thick cell walls. No intercellular air spaces. Brick-shaped. Transparent. No chloroplast. Protects underlying tissue from injury. Prevent excess water loss (waterproof). Allows sunlight to pass through.

#10
Front (Question)

What is a cuticle?

Back (Answer)

A waxy layer that covers the epidermis of a leaf and protects the plant.

#11
Front (Question)

What is a stoma?

Back (Answer)

Opening found on the epidermis of a leaf. Control gaseous exchange and transpiration.

#12
Front (Question)

What are guard cells?

Back (Answer)

Control the opening and closing of the pore. Bean-shaped.

#13
Front (Question)

What is a root hair?

Back (Answer)

Extension of cell wall of epidermis. Increase surface area of root for maximum absorption of water and nutrients.

#14
Front (Question)

What is ground tissue?

Back (Answer)

Ground tissue forms the body of the plant and is responsible for support, storage and photosynthesis.

#15
Front (Question)

What is Parenchyma?

Back (Answer)

Thin cell walls, large vacuole, loosely packed cells with intercellular air spaces between the cells that allow for gaseous exchange. Sparse cytoplasm, no chloroplast. Round. Used for storage of water, sugars and starches. Used for support. In all organs of plant, below epidermis, in centre, around connecting tissue.

#16
Front (Question)

Chlorenchyma?

Back (Answer)

Palisade mesophyll and spongy mesophyll. Between 2 epidermal layers. Thin cell wall. Present nucleus. Present cytoplasm. Both have chloroplasts but palisade cells have more than spongy mesophyll. Makes food by photosynthesis. Stores starch. Allow movement of gases and water.

#17
Front (Question)

What is Collenchyma?

Back (Answer)

Cell walls are unevenly thickened. Cells are packed together, Angular and no air spaces. Thick cell wall corners. Small nucleus, has cytoplasm and no chloroplast. Provides strength and flexibility to stems and leaves. Found just below epidermis.

#18
Front (Question)

What is Sclerenchyma?

Back (Answer)

Cells are dead (if mature) and hollow, cell wall contains lignin to make cells strong. Long fibres with tapered ends. Round sclereids. Cellulose and lignin all around cell. Very thick cell walls. No nucleus, cytoplasm or chloroplasts. Provides structure and support. Found in stems.

#19
Front (Question)

What is Xylem?

Back (Answer)

Xylem tissue transports water and mineral salts from ground water through the roots to the stems and leaves. Middle of root, veins of leaves.

#20
Front (Question)

What is lignin?

Back (Answer)

Complex material that stiffens cell walls in plants.

#21
Front (Question)

What is Phloem?

Back (Answer)

Transports food from the leaves, where photosynthesis takes place, to the other parts of the plant. Middle of root, veins of leaves.
