Verbal Guidance
• Used to describe action and explain how to perform activity. • Usually given with visual as motor skills difficult to describe without demo • So limited value on its own for beginners but useful for assoc/auton
Verbal Guidance +
• Can be in the form of feedback –> reinforce good movement / identify errors • Can hold attention of performers / motivate them
Verbal Guidance -
• Info overload –> distracted / confused • Could be inaccurate –> performer may not develop skills correctly
Visual Guidance
• Most common for teaching motor skills • Helps create mental image • Must be accurate
Visual Guidance +
• Makes creating mental picture easy • Enables skill to be seen in different stages = easier to learn/develop • Encourages observational learning –> draws attention to important cues
Visual Guidance -
• If demo incorrect –> learn bad habits / hinder development • Coach may not be able to show accurate demo • Demo may be unclear / too quick to follow
Mechanical/manual part 1
Physical support for performers by another person/mechanical device Physical Restriction E.g. armbands
Mechanical/manual part 2
Response of performer being directed physically by another person Forced Response E.g. holding arms of golfer forcing arms through movement of drive
What do manual/mechanical do
• Reduce fear in dangerous situes • Learner can grow in confidence as percieve they are safe • Provides feel of kinaesthetic movement
Mechanical/Manual +
• Greater sense of safety –> help with confidence • Can isolate parts of skill to practice sub routines(swimming floats)
Mechanical/Manual -
• Can feel over restrictive –> performer feels lack of control • False sense of kinaesthesis –> not getting feeling if body restricted
