Combustion reactions
• type of chemical reaction b/w a substance (usually fuels) & O₂(g) • release energy during reaction (exothermic)
Complete combustion
Fuel combines with excess oxygen to produce carbon dioxide and water
Incomplete combustion
Fuel combines with limited supply of oxygen to produce other products e.g carbon monoxide (CO) & carbon soot (C) * fewer chemical bonds made in formation of products & fuel not completely oxidised, produces less energy
What is the difference between reactants and reagents?
reactants = consumed during a reaction reagents = not neccersarily consumed
Limiting reactants or reagents
• limiting reactants/reagents will determine both the amount & types of products produced Fuel limiting & oxygen excess = complete combustion Fuel excess & oxygen limiting = incomplete combustion
What is a thermochemical equation?
• shows energy changes during an exothermic/endothermic reaction by providing a ΔH value w/ the balanced chemical equation
