Pathogenic microorganisms
Cause infection and disease
Aerobic
Requires oxygen to live
Anaerobic
Does not require oxygen to live
Bacteria
Often considered the cause of disease. Some are beneficial and they produce antibiotics. Some can develop resistance to antibiotics.
Protozoa
One celled, animal-like organism
Fungi
Organisms that usually enjoy a symbiotic, but sometimes parasitic relationship with their host. Examples include ringworm, foot fungus, and yeast infection.
Rickettsiae
Rod-shaped, parasitic bacteria that live in the tissues of ticks, fleas, and lice.
Virus
Small infectious agents that produce immune responses in humans. Treated with antiviral drugs(not antibiotics).
Helminths
Parasitic worm-like organisms that disrupt nutrient absorption.
Infection
Invasion of the body by microorganisms. Invading microorganisms interferes with normal function.
Local Infection
When only a specific portion of the body is infected. Pain, redness, heat/warmth at the site, swelling/edema, pus/foul smelling drainage.
Systemic Infection
Affects the entire body. Fever, aches, chills, nausea, vomiting, and weakness.
