What is the function of the endocrine system?
It is the system of glands throughout the body that regulate body functions. Its function is to regulate all the body’s biological processes using hormones.
What are hormones?
Hormones are chemical messengers that are released by different organs in the body called glands.
Where are hormones released?
In different organs of the body called glands through the blood stream.
How do hormones different from nerve impulses?
Hormones are slower acting than nerve impulses, but they are longer lasting.
produces melatonin which regulates sleep
Pineal
“the boss” activates other glands and produces substances like the growth hormone
pituitary gland
controls metabolic rate
Thyroid
produces several hormones, stimulates development of disease fighting cells (T-cells)
Thymus
produce adrenaline that speeds up the heart and prepares for danger (fight or flight response)
adrenal glands
produces insulin that regulates the sugar levels in the blood
Pancreas
produces female sex hormones (estrogen and progesterone)
Ovary
produces male sex hormone (testosterone) and sperm
Testes
What is the function of the reproductive system?
It is the body’s organs and structures that make it possible to produce offspring. It enables the male and female reproductive cells to join and form new offspring.
What are gametes?
Gametes are an organism’s reproductive cells, also called sex cells.
What are the male gametes? Female gametes?
The male gametes are testes and the female gametes are ovaries
What is a zygote?
When a sperm and egg come together it makes a zygote. A zygote will develop into an embryo that attaches to the inside of the uterus and continues to grow.
Put in order: fetus, gamete, embryo, zygote
Gamete, zygote, embryo, fetus.
What are the main organs of the male reproductive system and what do they do?
Testis: Where sperm and a hormone called testosterone are produced Urethra: It is the tube that semen (which contains sperm) travels through when it leaves the body Sperm Duct/ Vas Deferens: Transports mature sperm to the urethra Scrotum: Sperm develop in each testicle and are stored in these tubes where they mature
What are the main organs of the female reproductive system and what do they do?
Fallopian Tubes: These are tubes for the egg to travel from the ovaries to the uterus. This is where fertilization occurs. Ovary: Produce the hormones estrogen and progesterone which help the eggs mature Uterus: An organ that holds a developing fetus during pregnancy. Its lining is shed during menstruation
Describe the path of an egg.
It travels to the ovary where the egg is released. Then the fallopian tube where it could be fertilized. If it is fertilized then it plants itself into the uterus lining. If not then the egg travels down the tube into the uterus.
What is menstruation?
Menstruation is the regular discharge of blood from the inner lining of the uterus through the vagina.
