What are nonrenewable resources?
Resources that cannot be replenished in a short time frame, such as fossil fuels and minerals.
What are renewable resources?
Resources that can be replenished naturally, such as solar, wind, and hydro energy.
What are fossil fuels?
Energy sources formed from ancient biological materials, including coal, oil, and natural gas.
What is charcoal?
A black, porous material made from burning wood or other organic substances in low oxygen. Used as a fuel and in filtration.
What is peat?
A partially decomposed organic material that can be burned for fuel.
What is coal?
The remains of plant material from about 300 million years ago.
What is lignite?
A type of coal that is brownish-black and has the lowest carbon content among coals. Used as a fuel source and in electricity generation.
What is bituminous?
Materials containing or resembling bitumen which is a sticky, black viscous mixture of hydrocarbons derived from petroleum or natural deposits.
What is anthracite?
The highest-ranking hardest form of coal.
What is natural gas?
Gaseous form of fossil fuels formed in packs overall, that can be burned.
What is crude oil?
Also a form of petroleum, is an oil that is removed from underground made up of hydrocarbons, water, & sulfur.
What is cogeneration?
It is the use of fossil fuels to regenerate electricity and produce heat (steam.)
What is a turbine?
A rotating mechanical device that extracts kinetic and potential energy from a flowing object
What is a generator?
An electromechanical device that converts mechanical energy into electrical energy
What is a Hydraulic fracturing (fracking)?
A technique that extracts oil and natural gas from deep underground formation
What is Uranium-235?
A naturally occurring radioactive isotope of uranium that can be easily split to release massive energy
What is nuclear fission?
It is the splitting of an atoms nucleus into two smaller nuclei
What is a fuel rod?
A metal tube stacked with ceramic pellets of enriched uranium dioxide and is a primary source of nuclear fission.
What is a control rod?
A crucial safety device made of neutron-absorbing materials inserted between fuel rods in a nuclear reactor (think about Chernobyl)
What is an electric grid?
A large scale, interconnected network that generates, transmits, and distributes electricity from power plants to users. (Large metal towers)
What are tar sands?
Tar(oil) sands are slow flowing deposits of bitumen (degraded petroleum) mixed with sand, water and clay.
What is nuclear fusion?
The process of combining a light atomic nuclei to form heavier ones, releasing high amounts of energy.
What are isotopes?
Many of the same chemical element with the same number of protons but with a different number of neutrons resulting in different atomic masses.
What is radiation?
The emission or transmission of energy into the form of waves or particles through space.
