What are the functions of a kidney?
Excretion Osmoregulation
What is excretion?
The removal of waste products from chemical reactions, along with excess water, hormones and salts
What is osmoregulation?
The maintenance of the water and salt content of the internal environment
Describe the urinary system (5 stages)
• Blood flows through the glomerulus which runs inside the Bowman’s capsule. Here small molecules like water, urea and glucose pass through in a process called filtration • In the first convoluted tubule selective reabsorption occurs. Anything useful to the body (glucose) is pumped back into the body by active transport • In the loop of henle water is reabsorbed by osmosis depending on how much the body needs • In the second convoluted tubule fine turning of the blood water content takes place • In the collecting duct more fine tuning of the water concentration in blood takes place. The remaining fluid called urine flows into the ureter, and contains excess water, urea and other substances
What’s the function of the renal veins?
Carry blood with wastes removed back to the body
Whats the function of the renal arteries?
Carry blood from the body to the kidneys
What’s the function of the ureters?
Carry urine from the kidney to the bladder
What’s the function of the bladder?
Stores urine
What’s the function of urethra?
Urine flows through to the outside of the body
