What is the Independent Variable?
The variable that is chosen to test in an experiment It is manipulated to observe its effect on the dependent variable.
What is the Dependent Variable?
The variable that is measured as a result of an experiment It responds to changes in the independent variable.
What is a Control Variable?
Variable that is kept the same to increase the validity of an experiment Ensures that the results are due to the independent variable.
What is Qualitative Data?
Data that is descriptive and does NOT include numbers Often involves characteristics or qualities.
What is Quantitative Data?
Data that includes measured values or numbers Used for statistical analysis.
What is a Wave?
A disturbance or repeated pattern moving through a medium Can transfer energy without transferring matter.
What is Frequency?
The number of waves that pass a given point in one second Measured in Hertz (Hz).
What is Wavelength?
The length of one unit of a wave Typically measured from crest to crest or trough to trough.
What is Velocity?
The speed and direction of an object or wave (vector) Indicates how fast and in what direction something is moving.
What is Position?
The location of an object relative to a reference point Essential for understanding motion.
What is Speed?
How fast an object is moving (scalar) Does not include direction.
What is a Vector?
A number value that also has direction Examples include velocity and force.
What is a Scalar?
A number value that only has magnitude Examples include speed and mass.
What is Acceleration?
The rate at which an object changes velocity (vector measured in m/s/s) Can involve speeding up, slowing down, or changing direction.
What is a Force?
A push or pull Can cause an object to accelerate.
What is a Force Diagram?
Diagram of a square that shows all the forces on an object with arrows Helps visualize the net force acting on an object.
What is Inertia?
The tendency of an object with mass to resist changes in motion Related to Newton’s First Law.
What is Newton’s 1st Law?
An object’s motion will remain the same unless acted upon by an unbalanced force Also known as the law of inertia.
What is Newton’s 2nd Law?
F = ma Describes the relationship between force, mass, and acceleration.
What is Newton’s 3rd Law?
Every action force has an equal and opposite reaction force Explains interactions between objects.
What are Newtons?
The unit of force Named after Sir Isaac Newton.
What is a Longitudinal Wave?
A compression wave, such as sound Particles move parallel to the direction of the wave.
What is a Transverse Wave?
An ‘up and down’ wave, such as a wave in water Particles move perpendicular to the direction of the wave.
What is Amplitude?
The height or amount of energy in a wave Determines the wave’s energy level.
