Define the term joint
A joint occurs where two bones articulate (where they meet)
What are the different types of synovial joints?
Gliding, hinge, pivot, condyloid, saddle, ball-and-socket
What are gliding joints?
• move against each other on a single plane • major gliding joints examples are intervertebral joints and bones of wrists and ankles
What are hinge joints?
• move on just one axis • allow for flexion and extension • major hinge joints examples are elbow and finger joints
What are pivot joints?
• provides rotation • at the top of the spine, the atlas and axis form a pivot that allows for the rotation of the head
What are condyloid joints?
• allows circular motion, flexion, and extension • wrist joint between the radius and the carpal bones is an example of a condyloid joint
What are saddle joints?
• allows for flexion, extension, and other movements, but no rotation • thumb saddle joint lets thumb cross over the palm, making it opposable
What are ball-and-socket joints?
• freely moving joint that can rotate on any axis • hip and shoulder joints are examples of ball and socket joints
