why do microorganisms play such an important role in the marine foodweb?
• the primary producers are single celled • micro organisms have a very high specific metabolic rate (both these answers are correct)
the picture shows a cell of the species noctiluca. blooms of this species make the sea glow in the dark. To which group does this species belong?
dinoflagellates
the picture shows a cross section of the ocean floor. the arrow indicates the
(for this question it was continental shelf but double check)
how much of the oceans total bottoms is composed of the continental shelfes?
8%
what is this? (it looks like a snail)
a pteropod
the ocean around antartica has a much higher degree of endemism than the arctic ocean. briefly (1-2 sentences each) expalin three reasons for this difference LONG ANSWER
1) there is geographic isolation in arntarctica due to the interconnected circumpolar ocean surrounded by water. the arctic ocean doesnt have this. 2) there is a very stable and protected ecosystem - like theres highly abundant in anctarctic krill which forms a rich enviornment allowing unique species to evolve and flourish. - its enviornment is extreme allowing only those unique species to survive there 3) Arctic ocean is connected to large land masses which allows for greater interchange and mixing of species, whereas anctartcia is more cut off.
what is causing the sea surface temperature pattern in this picture?
costal upwelling
when light penetrates in water
it decreases exponentially with water depth
a sharp gradient between water layers of different density is called a
pycnocline
what is this (and it looks like an IUD)
a copepod
mean annual wind speed in ocean basins is highest in
the arctic areas
what is a measure of the evolutionary success of a taxon?
ALL OF THE ABOVE (high species richness, high number of organisms, large geographic range, large range of habitats(
the pH of the ocean is changing. What is the approximate change in pH of the ocean?
it has decreased by 0.1 pH unit
which of these is true?
OCEANIC CRUST HAS THE SAME THICKNESS, continental crust has variable thickness
which three elements are considered “limiting” in the oceans?
phosphorous iron nitrogen
what are the sources of nitrogen input in the sea?
all of the above (agriculture, traffic, deforestation, urban development)
the largest animals in various marine animal groups (such as baleen whales, whale sharks, and manta rays) are plankton feeders. what could be an explanation for this?
there is not enough food avaliable at higher trophic levels to support viable populations of these large species
what does redundancy hypothesis predict?
species from species-rich ecosystems can be lost without any loss of functions
