Describe a Boltzmann curve and explain the effect of increasing temperature

Describe collision theory
For a reaction to occur, particles need to collide with enough energy to break bonds. To increase the number of succesful collisions, we can • Increase temperature (more kinetic energy in each collision and more frequent collisions) • Increase concentrations (more particles in given volume, so more frequent collisions)
A succesful collision…
… is one where the collision has energy greater than the activation energy
Endothermic reaction
Takes in heat from surroundings (gets colder)
Exothermic reaction
gives out heat to the surroundings (gets hotter)
A catalyst
Speeds up a reaction by providing an alternative pathway with a lower activation energy
