Essential question: How does energy move through the biosphere?
The producers (plants) are the first trophic level; they get their energy from the sun. Then primary consumers (herbivores) eat the producers, which is where they get their energy. Secondary consumers (carnivores) eat primary consumers, and that is where they get their energy from. Tertiary consumers are omnivores and they can get their energy from consumers or from producers. Decomposers eat dead things which gives energy to the producers.
What is the energy pyramid?
A diagram to show that every organism is assigned a trophic (or feeding) level to keep track of the energy
What are the components of the energy pyramid?
Producers, primary consumers, then secondary consumers, and finally, tertiary consumers
Where does the energy go?
Energy is used for life functions (breathing, movement, digestion) and is lost as heat

What is the function of decomposers?
Decomposers complete the energy cycle and return nutrients to the ground.
