What is Chemical Structure?
The chemical structure of an atom shows the way atoms in a compound are arranged and determine many of the compounds properties.
What are Chemical Bonds?
Chemical bonds are forces that hold different atoms or ions together.
What is Bond Length?
The bond distance is the distance between the nuclei of two bonded atoms.
What are Bond Angles?
Bond angles tell how the atoms are oriented in space.
What is a Hydrogen Bond?
Hydrogen bonds are when an oxygen atom of a water molecule is attracted to a hydrogen atom of another water molecule close by
What is an Ionic Bond?
Ionic bonds are formed between oppositely charged atoms.
What are Metallic Bonds?
Metallic bonds form between metals. When one atoms nucleus attracts electrons, it packs the atoms close together. The packing causes the outermost energy levels of the atoms to overlap and the electrons are free to move from atom to atom.
What are Covalent Bonds?
Covalent bonds are often formed between non metal atoms, and it is when a bond forms when atoms shared one or more pairs of electrons.
What are Polyatomic Ions?
An ion made of two or more atoms
What is a Formula Unit?
A formula unit is a unit such as NaCl
What are Nonpolar Covalent Bonds?
Bonds in which the electrons are shared equally
What are Polar Covalent Bonds?
Bonds that do not share electrons equally.
What is the Empirical Formula?
The simplest formula of a compound, tells you the smallest whole number ratio of atoms that are in a compound.
What is the Molecular Formula?
The molecular formula tells how many atoms are in one molecule of the compound.
What is an Organic Compound?
An organic compound is a covalently bonded compound that contains carbon, excluding carbonates and oxides.
What is a Polymer?
Polymers are large molecules that are formed by five monomers, or small units.
What are Carbohydrates?
Any organic compound that is made of carbon, hydrgen, and oxygen that provides nutients to living things.
What is Protein?
An organic compound that is made of one or more chains of amino acids and is a principle component of all cells.
What are Amino Acids?
Any one of 20 different organic molecules that contain a carboxyl and an amino group that combine to form proteins.
What is a Hydrocarbon?
Compound made of only carbon
What is an alkane?
Single covalent hydrocarbon
What is an alkene?
Hydrocarbon with at least one double covalent bond between atms
What is DNA?
Genetic makeup.
