Mitosis
The division of the DNA and nucleus with the goal of making 2 identical daughter cells from an original cell
Centromere
Holds the two sister chromatid together during cell divisions
What is the order during Cell Division?
Interphase –> Prophase –> Metaphase –> Anaphase –> Telephase –> Cytokenesis –>
Daughter Cells
New cells produced by the division of parent cells through mitosis
Chromatid
One full linear molecule of DNA packaged with proteins
Prophase
DNA turns into chromosomes causing the nucleus to disappear; centrioles migrate to opposite sides while spindle fibers start to form
Metaphase
Chromosomes line up in the middle so that the spindle fibers are attached to the centromeres
Anaphase
Chromosomes separate, separating the sister chromatids causing it to move away from each other
Telephase (End of Mitosis)
Cells would pinch and divide; spindle fibers disappear while the nucleus forms again
Cytokenesis
(Overlaps with telophase) DNA unwinds again; ctyoplasm divides; cells are able to their everyday jobs
Diploid/2n
A cell has its full amount of chromosomes
What does mitosis preserve?
Preserves an organisms normal or full complement of chromosomes (Humans have 46)
Cancer
A disease in which some of the body’s own cells lose the ability to control cell division
How does cancer cell affect the body?
Forms large tumors that damaged the surrounding tissue; cancer cells can break loose from tumors and spreads throughout the body disrupting normal activities and organ function
Cancerous Tumor
An abnormal mass of tissue that damages the tissue and hijacking the body’s nutrients system in order to live and grow
