WHAT IS THE DIGESTIVE SYSTEM?
A group of organs that breakdown COMPLEX food material into SIMPLE food materials with the help of chemicals.
WHAT IS GASTROENTEROLOGY?
The branch of medicine focused on the diagnosis and treatment of diseases affecting the digestive system
WHAT ARE ALL THE STAGES?
• INGESTION • MECHANICAL PROCESSING • DIGESTION • SECRETION • ABSORPTION • EXCRETION
INGESTION
• first step in digestion • taking food through the mouth
MECHANICAL PROCESSING
• crushing/ shearing makes material • easier to move through the tract
DIGESTION
• process of breaking down large food molecules into smaller ones. • easier for cells to absorb the nutrients
SECRETION
release of water acids, buffers, enzymes and salts by epithelium of GI tract and glandular organs.
ABSORPTION
• transport of digested material into lymphatic system and cardiovascular for distribution to cells. • occuring in the small intestine
EXCRETION
• final stage in digestion • release of feces • Occurs in the RECTUM and expels through the ANUS
WHAT ARE THE TWO GROUPS OF ORGANS?
• GASTROINTESTINAL (GI) TRACT • ACCESSORY DIGESTIVE ORGANS
WHAT’S INCLUDED IN THE GASTROINTESTINAL TRACT
• MOUTH CAVITY • PHARYNX • ESOPHAGUS • STOMACH • SMALL INTESTINE • LARGE INTESTINE
WHAT’S INCLUDED IN THE ACCESSORY DIGESTIVE SYSTEM
• TEETH • TONGUE • SALIVARY GLANDS • PANCREAS • GALL BLADDER • LIVER
MOUTH What portion is it? begins what?
• upper expanded portion which forms the beginning of GI TRACT
FUNCTIONS OF MOUTH CAVITY
• SENSORY ANALYSIS • MECHANICAL PROCESSING • LUBRICATION • LIMITED DIGESTION
TONGUE Where is it located? What is it made out of? What is it covered with?
• floor of mouth cavity • made up of skeletal muscles covered with mucous membrane. • upper surface and sides covered with papillae (taste buds)
TYPES OF PAPILLAE ON THE TONGUE
• CIRCUMVALLATE PAPILLAE • FUNGIFORM PAPILLAE • FILIFORM PAPILLAE • FOLATE PAPILLAE
CIRCUMVALLATE PAPILLAE PAPILLAE ON THE TONGUE
• largest papillae • 8 to 12 papillae arranged in inverted V Shape towards the base of tongue
FUNGIFORM PAPILLAE PAPILLAE ON THE TONGUE
• mushroom-shaped • scattered on the tip sides of the tongue • smallest • reddish dot and contains taste buds
FILIFORM PAPILLAE PAPILLAE ON THE TONGUE
• whitish in color • do not contain taste buds • provide texture and grip
FOLATE PAPILLAE PAPILLAE ON THE TONGUE
• fold-like ridges on the sides of the tongue • contain taste buds (more prominent in children)
Where is the TEETH present and what is it responsible for?
• present in sockets of mandible (lower jaw bone) and maxilla (upper jawbone) • Responsible with chewing
TWO SETS OF TEETH
• PERMANENT TEETH (32) • TEMPORARY TEETH (20) * 2-incisors; 1-canine; 2 pre-molars; 3 molars
SALIVARY GLANDS
Glands in the mouth that produce saliva to help break down food and make swallowing easier.
3 PAIR OF SALIVARY GLANDS
• PARATOID GLANDS • SUBMANDIBULAR GLANDS • SUBLINGUAL GLANDS
