Endocrinology
The study of hormones
Non-target hormones
Affect many cells or tissues throughout the body (ex. HGH)
Target hormones
Affect only certain cells or tissues (ex. Adrenalin)
Exocrine glands
Glands that secrete substances anywhere else other than the blood stream (ex. Saliva)

Master gland because it exercises control over the other endocrine glands

Anterior- human growth hormone

Anterior- thyroid stimulating hormone
ACTH
Anterior- adrenocorticotropic hormone ( adrenal)

Anterior- folical stimulating hormone, male- sperm production, female- egg maturing
LH
Anterior- lutenizing hormone, male- testosterone, female- ovulation
Prolactin
Anterior- produce milk
ADH
Posterior- anti diuretic hormone, retain H2O
Oxytocin
Posterior- releases milk, uterine contractions

Thyroxine
This hormone increases a persons metabolic rate ( rate they burn energy)
Calcitonin
Calcium-in, helps regulate the amount of calcium in the blood. Let’s calcium into the cells, decreases blood calcium
Parathyroid
Releases PTH, inhibits the release of calcitonin from the thyroid, increasing blood calcium
Pancreas
Exocrine and endocrine gland. Produces buffers in the digestive tract and regulates blood sugars
Islets of langerhans
Produce hormones insulin and glucagon
Insulin
In-cell-in, cause the muscles and liver to become more permeable to glucose, letting sugar into the cells, therefore reducing blood sugar levels
Glucagon
Glucose-be-gone, causes the liver to release glucose, therefore increasing blood sugar levels, necessary for needed energy in the cells
