What are the 3 states of matter?
Solid, Liquid, Gas
Describe the arrangement and movement of particles in a SOLID?
STRONG forces hold particles in REGULAR arrangement, they can only vibrate in FIXED positions. Don’t have much energy. Definite shape and volume. When heated, a solid has more vibration and expansion (bigger) of particles.
Describe the arrangement and movement of particles in LIQUID?
SOME forces hold particles in an IRREGULAR arrangement, they are constantly moving around each other. No definite shape. Some volume. More energy in liquid state that solid state but less energy than gas state. When heated, particles move faster, expand a little.
Describe the arrangement and movement of particles in a GAS?
NO forces hold particles together, they are FREE to move quickly in all directions. Particles travel in straight lines. More energy than liquid or solid. When heated, move faster and expand or pressure increases.
Which has most energy? Gas, solid or liquid?
Gas
What happens when a substance is heated or cooled?
It physically changes its state.
Name the change of state when a SOLID turns into a LIQUID?
Melting
Name the change of state when a LIQUID turns into a GAS?
Evaporating
Name the change of state when a SOLID turns straight into a GAS
SUBLIMING
Name the change of state when a SOLID turns straight into a GAS?
Subliming
What is a pure substance?
Made of only ONE element and ONE compound
What is a mixture?
Substance that contains TWO or more ELEMENTS NOT chemically joined OR contains TWO or more COMPOUNDS
How can you test for a pure substance?
See if it has a SHARP MELTING POINT
What technique can be used to SEPARATE an INSOLUBLE SOLID from an INSOLUBLE LIQUID?
Filtration
What technique can be used to SEPARATE a LIQUID from a SOLUTION?
SIMPLE distillation
What technique can be used to separate a SOLUBLE SOLID from a SOLUTION?
FRACTAL distillation
What technique can be used to separate a mixture of coloured pigments?
Chromotography
In the technique mentioned in Q15, what is the mobile phase?
The solvent (e.g. water).
In a technique mentioned in Q15, what is the stationary phase?
The piece of filter paper.
In the technique mentioned in Q15, what should you do if a pigment does not seperate?
Change the solvent used.
What is the name given to water that is safe to drink?
POTABLE water
What is the FORMULA use to calculate Rf value for a SOLUTE?
Rf= distance travelled by solute divided by distance travelled by solvent
What are the 3 stages involved in water treatment?
Sedimentation Filtration Chlorination
When do chemical changes happen?
During chemical reactions
