#1

What does blood transport around your body?

oxygen, carbon dioxide, nutrients, waste products and hormones

#2

Name the 4 components which make up your blood

red blood cells white blood cells platelets plasma

#3

what is the function of the red blood cell

contains haemoglobin- transport oxygen no nucleus- allows more room to carry oxygen biconcave disc shape-increases surface area

#4

what is the function of the white blood cell

defends the body against disease shape means it can fir through the capillary walls

#5

what is the function of platelets

fragments of cells- involved in blood clotting

#6

what is the function of plasma

carries hormones, carbon dioxide, soluble nutrients and urea distributes heat around our body

#7

where is oxygen and glucose supplied to the heart from?

the coronary arteries

#8

rank the four components of blood from highest to lowest of their percentages in our body

• plasma • red blood cells • white blood cells and platelets (>1%)

#9

which side of the heart keeps oxygenated blood?

left hand side

#10

which side of the blood keeps deoxygenated blood

right hand side

#11

the heart is an organ made from ….

cardiac muscle

#12

the heart —— to pump blood around the body

contracts

#13

what does a double circulatory system mean?

the blood flows through the heart twice before completing a full circuit of the body

#14

In the right hand side of the heart, is there tricuspid or bicuspid valves?

Tricuspid Valves

#15

In the left hand side of the heart, is there tricuspid or bicuspid valves?

Bicuspid Valves

#16

name the steps for the QER question of ‘ describe the route of the blood as it flows through the heart

• Firstly, deoxygenated blood from the organs enters the heart through the vena cava. • Then, the blood fills the right atrium which then contracts , forcing the blood down to the right ventricle • A tricuspid valve will prevent back flow and keeps the flow flowing in one direction. • Then the right ventricle contracts which forces the blood out of the heart and along the pulmonary artery, to the lungs. • A semi lunar valve will prevent back flow into the heart. • Blood then become oxygenated in the lungs before travelling back to the heart via the pulmonary vein. • The oxygenated blood then fills the left atrium. • Contractions will then force the blood down into the left ventricle and a bicuspid valve prevents back flow • The left ventricle then contracts and pushes the blood out under high pressure through the aorta, which supplies the whole body with oxygenated blood and the semi lunar valves will prevent back flow into the heart.

#17

why are the walls of the left ventricle thicker than the walls of the right ventricle

because it needs to contract with greater force so the blood will reach the whole body instead of just the lungs

#18

arteries carry blood…

away from the heat

#19

veins carry blood….

to the heart

#20

where are capillaries found?

within tissues and organs

#21

name 3 risk factors for cardiovascular disease

• lack of exercise • smoking • high blood pressure

#22

describe the vena cava

carries deoxygenated blood from the body to heart

#23

describe the semilunar valves

flaps that prevent backflow of blood

#24

describe the left atrium

receives oxygenated blood from the lungs
