What is the formula of benzene?
C6H6
What are the 3 pieces of evidence that support benzene over cyclohexa-1,3,5-triene?
• benzene doesn’t readily undergo addition reactions • all C-C bonds in benzene are the same length (which is between the length of a C-C bond and a C=C bond) • enthalpy of hydrogenation of benzene is 152 kJ mol^-1 less exothermic than the triene
Is cyclohexa-1,3-diene or cyclohexa-1,4-diene more stable? Why?
• in cyclohexa-1,3-diene delocalisation occurs because the double bonds are only 1 single bond apart so the electron clouds overlap • in cyclohexa-1,4-diene the double bonds are 2 single bonds apart so they’re far apart enough for the electron clouds to not overlap
