Levels of memory
Sensory Memory (SM) Short Term Memory (STM) Long Term Memory (LTM) or discarded
Sensory Memory
The brain has a constant flow of information from the environment e.g., sounds, smells. The sensory memory will retain all visual and auditory input received for a few seconds. Only selected images and sounds are encoded into the STM.
STM
Limited capacity where it can only hold around 7 pieces (+ or - 2) of information for a short time (30 seconds). Information can be encoded into the LTM. Information is lost by: Displacement Decay
Improving STM
Chucking Splitting the information into smaller groups e.g., postcodes and phone numbers.
LTM
Unlimited capacity and can hold information for a long time. Methods to encode information from STM to LTM: Rehearsal Organisation (categories) Elaboration (adding meaning, linking with memories) ROE
Retrieval
Information can be recalled from the LTM through being aided by contextual cues which relate to the time and place where the information was initially encoded into the LTM.
