#1
Front (Question)

Where does beta oxidation of fatty acids occur

Back (Answer)

Matrix of the mitochondria

#2
Front (Question)

State briefly what the beta oxidation pathway involves.

Back (Answer)

Fatty acids degrade two carbons at a time to form Acetyl CoA, NADH and FADH2

#3
Front (Question)

Explain fully the 3 stages of beta oxidation

Back (Answer)

Activation - The fatty acids are activated to form fatty acyl CoA in the cytosol Transport - The carnitine shuttle transfers long chain fatty acyl CoA from the cytoplasm to the matrix of the mitochondria Degradation - Fatty acyl CoA is dehydrogenated to form to form FADH2 and other intermediates. This intermediate is then hydrated (requires H2O). This intermediate is then dehydrogenated again to form NADH. Thiolysis then occurs to form Acetyl CoA

#4
Front (Question)

Cann fatty acids be converted into glucose?

Back (Answer)

No because no fatty acid is gluconeogenic

#5
Front (Question)

What does thiolysis produce?

Back (Answer)

Acetyl CoA which feeds into the citric acid cycle

#6
Front (Question)

What happens to excess acetyl CoA?

Back (Answer)

They form ketone bodies (because acetyl CoA is NOT gluconeogenic)

#7
Front (Question)

State the role of peroxisomes.

Back (Answer)

Beta oxidation of long chain fatty acids (>=22 carbons)

#8
Front (Question)

Describe what happens during fasting/starvation.

Back (Answer)

Glucose supplies run low so excess acetyl CoA from fat metabolism can be made into ketone bodies

#9
Front (Question)

State where ketogenesis occurs.

Back (Answer)

Liver

#10
Front (Question)

State what is produced during ketogenesis.

Back (Answer)

Acetone

#11
Front (Question)

Acetone is expelled during expiration because acetone is

Back (Answer)

Too volatile and unstable to be used as a metabolite

#12
Front (Question)

State the main ketone bodies.

Back (Answer)

Acetoacetate and 3-hydroxybutarate

#13
Front (Question)

Each beta oxidation cycle forms

Back (Answer)

1 Acetyl CoA 1 NADH 1 FADH2
