What is a topographic map?
A map that shows natural and human-made features and the shape of Earth’s surface by using lines to represent different elevations
What is the purpose of a topographic map?
This type of map is the best tool for determining the shape and size of a landform (like a hill, valley, or erosional feature) if you cannot visit the location
Relief
This term refers to the difference between the highest and lowest elevations on a map
Contour Line
A line on a topographic map that connects all points of equal elevation
Contour Interval
The difference in elevation between adjacent contour lines. This value is constant across the entire map.
How do you find the contour interval?
• Take two adjacent index contour lines • Subtract the smaller from the greater. • Count how many contour lines are between • Divide the distance between the two index contour lines by the amount of contour lines between.
How is a steep indicated?
Through a circle/circles at the top.
How do you indicate elevation lowering?
By adding little marks onto the line. These are known as hatch marks.
How is a gentle slope indicated?
Through broadly spaced contour lines.
How is a steep slope indicated?
Through close contour lines.
How do you find river flow direction WITH altitude indicators?
A river flows from higher points to lower points—track where elevation lowers.
How do you find river flow direction WITHOUT altitude indicators?
When crossing a river, contour lines naturally form a V-shape that points upstream. Therefore, the river flows the opposite direction.
