change blindness
we are often blind to large changes because we can’t attend to all visual information

unconscious cues that get processed by sensory systems but do not reach consciousness
circadian rhythms
body temperature, hormone levels, and sleep are regulated by light and dark
stages of sleep and their waves
alert: beta just before: alpha Stage 1 (barely asleep, floating): theta Stage 2: theta but with large waves called k-complexes that keep you asleep Stages 3/4: delta, deep sleep REM (back up in stage 1): betas
obstructive sleep apnea
stop breathing for short periods during sleep, often waking them up
why we need sleep
• encourage growth by releasing growth hormone • clear out toxic by-products • evolutionarily it made sense for us to not be active during the day • consolidation of memories
different kinds of dreams
REM: bizarre, emotional, visual non-REM: mundane activities
activation-synthesis theory
random brain activity occurs and the mind tries to make sense of it and store it with memories
