Define osmoregulation.

What is the role of osmoreceptors?
• Monitor blood water potential.
What causes the blood water potential to change?
• Dehydration • Too much water.
What would occur if the blood water potential is too low? (3)
• Water leaves the osmoreceptors and moves into the blood by osmosis. • Osmoreceptors shrink. • Action potentials generated. • Lower water potential therefore higher frequency impulses to the posterior pituitary gland.
What would occur if the blood water potential is too high? (3)
• Water enters the osmoreceptors by osmosis. Too much can make the cell burst, so they send lower frequency impulses to the posterior pituitary gland.
Where does the posterior pituitary gland receive impulses from?
• Osmoreceptors in the hypothalamus.
How does ADH effect the collecting duct membrane?
• To become more permeable to water by increasing the number of aquaporins in the membrane resulting in more water being reabsorbed.
