Genetics
The branch of biology that studies genes, heredity, and the variation of organisms
Gregor Mendel
Scientists widely know as the “father of genetics”
Dominant
Most powerful, influential or successful in a given context of something
Recessive
Only physically expressed when an individual inherits 2 copies from each parent
Probability
The mathematical measure of how likely an event is to occur
Allele
A specific, variant of a gene
Heterozygous
Organism inherited two different versions of alleles from its biological parents (Bb)
Homozygous
Organism that carriers 2 identical copies of alleles for specific trait
Punnet sqaure
A table in which all of the possible outcomes for a genetic code crossing between 2 individual
Trait
Specific characteristic or feature of an organism
Genotype
An organism’s complete set of genetic make up
Phenotype
The observable, physical expression of the trait
Carrier
Someone who has inherited an mutated gene but does not show any symptoms in regards of the gene
Incomplete dominant
A genetic inheritance pattern where one allele blends with the other allele creating a new phenotype
Sex-linked Trait
A genetic characteristic controlled by genes located on the sex chromosomes
Codominance
A genetic inheritance pattern where two different versions of the alleles are both fully and equally expressed in an individual
Hybrid
An organism that results from the interbreeding of two genetically distinct parents
Pure (true) breeding
A genetic process in which the parents with identical alleles consistently produce offspring with the same phenotype over multiple generations
Germline mutaiton
Mutations that only occur in reproductive cells/gametes that CAN be passed down to offsprings
P (Parental Generation)
Possess homozygous alleles for a specific trait; purebred or “true-breeding”
F1 (First Filial) Generation
Displays only dominant traits inherited from parents which masks recessive traits; heterozygous
Human Blood Type
A and B are codominant, o is recessive
