what is the method for this practical when examining the interior of the heart?
• cut down each side of the heart to open up the left atrium and left ventricle and the right atrium and right ventricle. take a picture once you have finished dissecting the heart. look for the cords holding the atrio-ventricular valves, and lift the weight of the heart by holding one of these cords over a dissecting needle. • look at how thin the atrio-ventricular valves are. • examine the thickness of the walls of the ventricles. • which side is thicker, and why? • look at the walls of the atria, they are much thinner, why? • push the handle of the dissecting needle up behind atrio-ventricular valves. should notice that the aorta and pulmonary arteries cross over. • make flags from pins and sticky labels and label the parts of the heart that you can identify. • make sure they are legible and visible as you look down on your dissection.
what is the method for this practical when you are done and putting everything away?
• remove all pins and discard labels. • place pins and dissecting instruments in the beaker with disinfectant. • place the heart in the disposal bag • use the disinfectant spray to clean the dissecting board and bench, using paper towels to dry them. dispose of the towels in the disposal bag along with plastic gloves.
risk assessment for this practical. what are the hazards, the risks that come with them and the safety precautions required?
• biohazard, using raw heart tissue. contamination with pathogens causing illness. use disinfectant on all surfaces, keep the heart on the dissection board, wash hands with soap after dissection with antibacterial soap, wear gloves • sharp tools eg scalpel. cuts from sharp object. cut heart away from the body, cut on dissection board, use forceps to hold tissue while cutting, keep away from edge of desk. ensure blade is sharp • disinfectant. flammable. keep away from any source of naked flame • blood and fluids. biohazard, spreads bacteria. dispose of waste as instructed, avoid contact with eyes and mouth • skin contact with disinfectant. skin irritation or allergic reaction. wear gloves, dispose of them after use, cover any cuts with waterproof dressings
