Card preview (3)
Which solvent are samples usually dissolved in for NMR? Why?
CCl4 as: HNMR- it contain no Hydrogen atoms which may appear on the spectrum CNMR - (note: will be a single peak for C atom for CNMR)
What molecule is used for callibration of HNMR? Why?
TMS (tetramethylsilane) as it produces a single peak, is non-toxic, inert, gives a signal that is further right than most others and has a low boiling point so can easily be removed from the sample afterwards
What is the Chemical Shift?
How far away the signal is from the signal of TMS. The chemical shift depends on what other atoms and groups are near the H, the closer the H is to electronegative atoms, the greater the shift. (don’t need to learn precisely - a general understanding is proficient)
