An oxidation reaction involves
gaining oxygen and/or losing electrons
A reduction reaction involves
losing oxygen and/or gaining electrons
anagram for oxidation and reduction
OIL RIG (oxidation is loss reduction is gain)
Example of oxidation
2MGO + O2 ==> 2MGO
Example of reduction
Fe2O3 + 3CO ==> 2Fe + 3CO2
Redox reactions involve
a reduction and a oxidation reaction
Example of redox reaction
• CuO + Zn ==> ZnO + Cu • We can rewrite Cu2+ + O2- ==> Zn2+ + O2- + Cu • we can remove oxygen because they are spectator ions and don’t take part in the reaction • Cu2+ + Zn ==> Zn2+ + Cu • We can make two half equations • Cu2+ + 2e- ==> Cu and Zn ==> Zn2+ + 2e- • Zinc is reducing agent and copper is oxidising agent
Iron(II) oxide (FeO) and Iron(III) oxide (Fe2O3) are
oxidation states which Iron(II) oxide as oxidation state of 2+ and Iron(III) oxide as 3+
