Physical properties of transition elements
• good conductors of heat/electricity • hard and strong • high density • high melting points (except mercury which is a liquid)
Chemical properties of transition elements
• much less reactive than alkali metals • do not react as easily with oxygen/water than alkali metals do • only reacts with other elements in the correct conditions
Reactions of the transition elements
• always form positive ions - always form different coloured compounds
Why do they form different coloured compounds
due to the different charges of the metal ions in the compound
Copper (II) sulfate colour compound
• Cu+2 - blue compound
nickel (II) carbonate colour of compound
pale green
chromium (III) oxide colour of compound
dark green
manganese (II) chloride colour of compound
pale pink
