Arousal
• Motivation represents the intensity and direction of behaviour • Arousal = the intensity aspect of motivation • Effects can be positive/negative • A physiological and psychological state of alertness
Physiological impact of arousal
• Increased HR • Breathing • Sweaty
Psychological impact of arousal
• Worry • Anxiousness
Raising arousal causes…
A state of readiness to perform If we don’t control it, we wont perform at our best
Drive theory
• Performance increases in proportion to arousal • High arousal = high performance • P=f(HD) • If dominant response correct, performance enhanced • Drive reduction = drive reduced when individuals lose motivation
Inverted U Theory
• Optimal level of arousal • If over aroused, become anxious and performance declines • Not Physic/Psycho ready to perform • Sport specific • More skilled = higher arousal • More extrovert = higher arousal for optimum performance
Catastrophe Theory
• Dramatic decline in performance when arousal above optimal • Somatic arousal • Cognitive arousal • High S & C = rapid decrease in performance • High C + low S = performance can recover
Reticular Activating System
• Regulates levels of arousal • Enhance/inhibit sensory stimuli
