What is the function of a flower?
Reproduction
What is the function of a leaf?
Contains chlorophyll to carry out photosynthesis
What is the function of a stem?
Support, contains vessels for transport.
What is the function of the roots?
Anchorage, Absorption, storage
Where do apical meristems occur?
At the tips of shoots and roots.
Where do lateral meristems occur?
At the cambium.
What does a pollinated flower become?
A seed/fruit, this is plant offspring created via sexual reproduction.
What do apical meristems do?
Cause primary growth (i.e. widening of the plant), produces new leaves 🍃 and flowers 🌺
What do lateral meristems do?
Cause secondary growth (i.e. widening of plant), produce bark on trees 🌳
True or false: a leaf is an organ
True
True or false: a transport system is not an organ system
False
True or false: the palisade mesophyll layer is a tissue
True
What is the waxy cuticle?
A waxy substance that reduces water loss by evaporation
What is the upper epidermis?
Thin and transparent to let light through
What is the palisade mesophyll layer?
Regular shaped cells packed with chloroplasts. Maximum absorption of light for photosynthesis
What is the spongy mesophyll?
Irregular shaped cells to increase the surface area for gas exchange. Carbon dioxide diffuses into these cells and is exchanged with oxygen during the day.
What do guard cells do?
Swell and open the stomata
What does the stomata do?
Allows gas exchange with the environment.
What does the phloem do?
Carries sugars out of the leaf.
What does the xylem do?
Carry water and minerals into the leaf.
Look at your book to see the structure of a leaf.

What is a vascular bundle?
A collection of cells that contains xylem and phloem
Where are the vascular bundles in the roots?
Xylem vessels are tough and strong, so the vascular bundle are found in the centre of the root to resist forces that could pull the plant out of the ground.
