Colloid
A mixture consisting of tiny particles that are intermediate in size between those in solutions and those in suspensions
Emulsion
Any mixture of two or more immiscible liquids in which one liquid is dispersed into the other
Solution
A homogeneous mixture of two or more substances uniformly dispersed throughout a single phase.
Solute
The substance that dissolves in the solvent
Solvent
The substance in which a solute dissolves.
Alloy
A solid or liquid mixture of two or more metals
Heterogeneous Mixture
A mixture that does not completely mix. Heterogeneous is easily split apart
Decanting
The process of pouring a lighter liquid off of a heavier liquid
Immiscible
Liquids that do not mix
Tyndall Effect
The scattering of light when it passes through a liquid.
Polar Compound
A molecule that has an uneven distribution of electrons
Hydrogen Bonding
The force occuring when a hydrogen atom that is bonded to a highly negative atom of one molecule is attracted to two unshared electrons of another molecule.
Nonpolar Compound
A compound whose electrons are equally distributed
Solubility
The maximum amount of a solute that will dissolve in a given solvent
Concentration
The amount of a substance in a given amount of a mixture, solution, or ore
Unsaturated Solution
A solution that contains less solute than a saturated solution which can dissolve additional solute.
Saturated Solution
A solution that cannot dissolve any more solute
Supersaturated Solution
A solution that holds more dissolved solute than is required to reach equillibrium at a given temperature.
Molarity
An expression of the concentration of a solution in moles of dissolved solute per liter of solution.
Insoluble
Does not dissolve
Soluble
Does dissolve
Dilute
A concentration that contains a small amount of solute.
Suspension
A mixture in which particles of a material are more or less evenly dispersed throughout a liquid or gas.
