Pathway of respiration
Nasal cavity, pharynx, epiglottis, larynx, trachea, bronchi, bronchioles, alveoli, capillaries
Epiglottis
Flap tissue which prevents choking by covering the trachea when food is swallowed
Nasal cavity
Rich in capillaries and lined with mucous-secreting cells and cilia to filter air
Pharynx
(Throat) location where inhaled air from the nasal cavity meets the inhaled air from the mouth. Very muscular region and common path for air & food
Larynx
(voice box) Upper part of the trachea which contains the vocal cords, made of cartilage
Trachea
(Windpipe) hollow tube which connects the pharynx to bronchi, consist of cartilage rings, smooth muscle, mucous cells and cilia
Bronchi
Two tubes which consist of cartilage, smooth muscle, mucous cells and cilia
Bronchioles
Smaller branches of the bronchi found inside the lungs that contain cartilage rings and smooth muscle
Alveoli
Grape life branches of air sacs that receive air from the bronchioles. This is the site of gas exchange with the capillaries
Lungs
2 soft, spongy organs. Located in the throatic cavity
Diaphragm
Large, thin band of muscle that separates the chest from the stomach
Gas exchange
When the respiratory system moves oxygen in and removes carbon dioxide from your body
Which organs perform gas exchange
Lungs and capillaries
Where does gas exchange occur
In the blood vessels
