#1
Front (Question)

What is studied in this experiment?

Back (Answer)

The effect of temperature on reaction rate using sodium thiosulfate solution and hydrochloric acid

#2
Front (Question)

Describe the 9 steps to this experiment

Back (Answer)

• A conical flask is placed on a sheet of white paper marked with a cross • 100 cm cubed of 0.05 cm cubed of sodium thiosulfate solution is added to the conical flask at room temperature • 5 cm cubed of 3 M HCL is added to sodium thiosulfate solution • The conical flask is swirled and a stop clock is started • The exact temperature of the contents of the flask is recorded • The time in seconds taken for the cross to disappear is recorded • The rate as the inverse of the time (1/time) is calculated • The equipment is rinsed • The experiment is repeated at different temperatures i.e. the sodium thiosulfate is heated to 30, 40, 50 and 60 degrees Celsius using a hot plate before adding the HCL

#3
Front (Question)

What is the conical flask placed on in this experiment?

Back (Answer)

A white sheet marked with a cross

#4
Front (Question)

How much 0.05 M sodium thiosulfate solution is added to the conical flask?

Back (Answer)

100 cm cubed

#5
Front (Question)

What M of sodium thiosulfate solution is used?

Back (Answer)

0.05 M

#6
Front (Question)

What M of HCL is used?

Back (Answer)

3 M

#7
Front (Question)

How much 3 M HCL is added to the sodium thiosulfate solution?

Back (Answer)

5 cm cubed

#8
Front (Question)

What is done once the HCL has been added to the sodium thiosulfate solution?

Back (Answer)

The conical flask is swirled The flask is placed on the sheet marked with a cross A stop clock is started

#9
Front (Question)

When is the exact temperature recorded?

Back (Answer)

After the acid has been added to the sodium thiosulfate solution

#10
Front (Question)

What is recorded once the sodium thiosulfate solution has been combined with the HCL?

Back (Answer)

The exact temperature is recorded

#11
Front (Question)

When is the reaction said to be completed?

Back (Answer)

When the cross can no longer be seen through the solution

#12
Front (Question)

When is the stop clock stopped?

Back (Answer)

When the solution has become milky/ colour change form colourless to creamy yellow

#13
Front (Question)

What is recorded after the reaction has stopped?

Back (Answer)

The rate of the reaction as an inverse of time (1/time)

#14
Front (Question)

What is done before the experiment is repeated?

Back (Answer)

The equipment is rinsed

#15
Front (Question)

At what temperatures is the experiment repeated?

Back (Answer)

30, 40, 50 and 60 degrees Celsius

#16
Front (Question)

When a graph of the rate of the reaction is plotted against the temperature, what type of graph is observed?

Back (Answer)

Unlike the graph used to plot the rate of reaction against concentration of sodium thiosulfate solution in M/L the rate of reaction is not directly proportional to the temperature and it is therefore not a straight line graph
