#1
Front (Question)

What is the purpose of converting Pyruvate to Lactate in animal muscle cells?

Back (Answer)

To re-oxidize/regenerate NAD. This allows Glycolysis to continue producing a small amount of ATP (2 molecules) even when oxygen is absent.

#2
Front (Question)

Describe the chemical change from Pyruvate to Lactate.

Back (Answer)

Pyruvate is reduced This is catalyzed by the enzyme lactate dehydrogenase.

#3
Front (Question)

Is Lactic Acid fermentation reversible? How?

Back (Answer)

Yes. When oxygen becomes available again, Lactate is transported to the liver and converted back into Pyruvate. It then enters the Link Reaction or is converted to glucose/glycogen. This requirement for oxygen is called the Oxygen Debt.

#4
Front (Question)

How does the anaerobic pathway in plants/yeast differ from animals?

Back (Answer)

pyruvate decarbondated to ethanal ethanal reduced (gains H from reduced NAD) to ethanol

#5
Front (Question)

Is Alcoholic Fermentation reversible?

Back (Answer)

No cannot be converted back to pyruvate if ethanol conc builds up too high it becomes toxic and kills the cells

#6
Front (Question)

does decarboxylation happen in animals

Back (Answer)

no

#7
Front (Question)

does decarboxylation happen in plants / yeast

Back (Answer)

yes

#8
Front (Question)

how many steps in animals

Back (Answer)

1 step pyruvate –> lactate

#9
Front (Question)

how many steps in plants / yeast

Back (Answer)

2 step Pyruvate –> ethanal –> ethanol

#10
Front (Question)

enzyme involved in animals

Back (Answer)

lactate dehydrogenase

#11
Front (Question)

enzyme involved in plants / yeast

Back (Answer)

pyruvate decarboxylase & ethanol dehydrogenase

#12
Front (Question)

is the lactate fermentation reversible

Back (Answer)

yes lactate –> glycogen in liver

#13
Front (Question)

is the ethanol fermentation reversible

Back (Answer)

no ethanol is a waste product
