#1
Front (Question)

why do we need to know about thermodynamics?

Back (Answer)

to know how drugs act on receptors, how drugs are distributed around body, how we formulate drugs into medicines

#2
Front (Question)

what is thermodynamics?

Back (Answer)

science of energy transfer

#3
Front (Question)

what is energy?

Back (Answer)

ability to perform work

#4
Front (Question)

what can thermodynamics tell you about a reaction?

Back (Answer)

whether a reaction or process will take place but NOT HOW FAST

#5
Front (Question)

what is kinetics?

Back (Answer)

study of rates or reactions or processes

#6
Front (Question)

what is kinetic energy?

Back (Answer)

the energy of movement of objects/ mass (mechanical energy)

#7
Front (Question)

what is potential energy?

Back (Answer)

energy that is stored (e.g nuclear energy)

#8
Front (Question)

what is heat?

Back (Answer)

form of energy caused by molecular motions. thermal energy is transferred between objects.

#9
Front (Question)

what is temperature?

Back (Answer)

• describes the tendency of heat to flow from one body to another • initially sensory

#10
Front (Question)

freezing point of water

Back (Answer)

0 degrees celsius

#11
Front (Question)

boiling point of water

Back (Answer)

100 degrees celsius

#12
Front (Question)

body temperature

Back (Answer)

37 degrees celsius

#13
Front (Question)

what is the thermodynamic scale?

Back (Answer)

• used for accurate work • zero on the scale = zero of molecular motion • measured in kelvins (0 degrees celsius =0 in·kelvin² 273.15K)

#14
Front (Question)

what does work represent?

Back (Answer)

transfer of energy in an ordered fashion (remember heat is just random molecular motions)

#15
Front (Question)

what can work be defined as?

Back (Answer)

the energy barrier it overcomes

#16
Front (Question)

what are work and heat’s units?

Back (Answer)

joules (J)

#17
Front (Question)

W stands for?

Back (Answer)

work

#18
Front (Question)

Q stands for?

Back (Answer)

heat

#19
Front (Question)

total internal energy of system

Back (Answer)

U

#20
Front (Question)

isolated system

Back (Answer)

no matter or energy interaction or exchange with outside environment (completely sealed off) (e.g thermos flask)

#21
Front (Question)

closed system

Back (Answer)

no exchange of matter, can be exchange of energy (tight lid on cup of tea, can still lose energy but not the matter)

#22
Front (Question)

open system

Back (Answer)

both matter and energy can be exchanged with outside environment (hot cup of tea)

#23
Front (Question)

why do work and heat have an interdependence?

Back (Answer)

you can convert heat into work. e.g if gas expands due to heat in piston, it will push piston up, performing work. if you push piston back down, you are putting work against the system so a system can do work, but can also have work performed on it.

#24
Front (Question)

what is internal energy the sum of?

Back (Answer)

the work which is done against the atmosphere + heat energy in system
