What are the four parts of a lever?
The lever - the bone The fulcrum - point of movement usually at the center of a joint A load - body’s weight or external effort An effort - muscular force that moves the load
What are the 3 types of levers?
1st class levers (1F) 2nd class levers (2L) 3rd class levers (3E)
What is the main function of the first and second levers?
Work at a mechanical advantage (can lift a large load with a relatively small amount of effort)
What is the main function of the third class levers?
Work at a mechanical disadvantage (the effort and the load are on the same side of the fulcrum)
Example of 1st class levers
When the head and neck are being extended and flexed
Example of second class levers
Stepping up onto your toes at the take off for a long jump (anytime using calves)
Example of 3rd class levers
Bicep curls Most common type of lever Anything to do with throwing
What happens when the resistance arm is longer?
The greater the speed at the end of it (weight will move fast) but not good for lifting/moving something heavy
