#1
Front (Question)

What type of technique is pipe-lining?

Back (Answer)

Pipelining is a technique which can be used by a processor to improve performance

#2
Front (Question)

What is pipe-lining?

Back (Answer)

• The concurrent processing of multiple instructions. • One instruction is fetched whilst the previous is decoded and the previous one to that is executed. • If branching, the whole pipeline has to be flushed. This increases the speed of execution.

#3
Front (Question)

Why is it efficient to use pipe-lining?

Back (Answer)

• Can make use of the various registers in the CPU • It allows different parts of instructions across multiple stages to be held in different registers at the same time

#4
Front (Question)

What two types of pipe-line is processor pipe-lining split into?

Back (Answer)

1) Instruction pipeline 2) Arithmetic pipeline

#5
Front (Question)

What is is Instruction pipeline?

Back (Answer)

It consists of stages in which an instruction must move through the processor

#6
Front (Question)

What is Arithmetic pipeline?

Back (Answer)

It consists of the parts of an arithmetic operation that can be broken down and overlapped as they are carried out

#7
Front (Question)

Why is pipelining very common in processors nowadays?

Back (Answer)

It allows multiple instructions to be executed at the same time

#8
Front (Question)

What is a limitation of pipelining?

Back (Answer)

A program with lots of branch instructions may not benefit much from the effects of pipelining
