What is a functional group?
• a particular group of atoms • responsible for how a molecule reacts
Functional group of an alkene
C=C
• How do alkenes react with oxygen • How is it different to alkanes
• Alkenes burn with a yellow smoky flame • ## Can do complete combustion BUT usually incomplete • Release less energy than alkanes so aren’t used as fuels • Used for polymers and plastic
General addition reactions of alkenes
• Double bond is very reactive • Molecules that react with alkenes ‘add across the double bond’ • aka double bond is broken, molecule added either side
Addition reaction: hydrogen
• Goes from alkEne to alkAne • Nickel catalyst • 60C
Addition reaction: Steam
• alkEne to alcohol • Over 100 C
Addition reaction: halogen
• Double bond breaks • Diatomic molecule is added (one on each bond)
Why is there a colour change: alkene + bromine
• As the double bond is broken • A reaction can happen
What is the functional group of an alcohol
• OH
What are the first 4 alcohols
• Methanol • Ethanol • Propanol • Butanol
Writing alcohol chemical formula
• You have to keep OH at the end • CH3CH2OH
4 main uses of alcohol
• Solvent • Drinks • Antiseptics • Fuel
Alcohol reactions: Sodium
• An -oxide and hydrogen is created • ethanol + sodium -> sodium ethoxide + hydrogen
Alcohol reactions: Combustion
• Complete combustion • Ethanol + oxygen -> carbon dioxide + water
Alcohol reactions: Water
• Shortest hydrocarbon mix easily to produce a solution • The longer the hydrocarbon the harder to mix • two distinct layers maybe left
Alcohol reactions: oxidising agent
• Oxidising agent = [O] • alcohol + [O] -> carboxylic acid + water • ethanol + 2[O] -> ethanoic acid + water • Wine -> vinegar
How is alcohol formed
• Fermentation • Ethene
Alcohol from fermentation
• Glucose -> ethanol + Carbon dioxide Conditions - yeast or bio catalyst - 40C - anaerobic Bio fuel - Renewable resource - Made from plants
Alcohol from ethene
• Ethene + Steam -> ethanol Conditions - Over 100C (steam) Ethene - Get from cracking - Crude oil -> finite resource
Carboxylic acid functional
• COOH • A double bond between C and O • Single bond between C and O • Single bond between O and H
First 4 carboxylic acid
• Methanoic Acid • Ethanoic Acid • Propanoic Acid • Butanoic Acid
Writing carboxylic acid chemical formula
• Keep COOH at the end • Molecular : C2H5COOh • Structural: CH3CH2COOH
Different types of formulas
