Define anatomy
The study of the structure of the human body
What is the integumentary system
The body system made of skin, hair, nails, sweat glands, and oil glands.
What is the skeletal system
The body system made of bones, cartilage, ligaments, and joints.
What is the muscular system
The body system made of muscles that allows movement and helps maintain posture and body functions.
What is the nervous system
The body system that controls and coordinates activities by sending signals throughout the body (Brain, spinal cord, and nerves).
What is the cardiovascular system
The body system made of the heart, blood, and blood vessels that moves blood through the body.
What is the lymphatic system
A body system that helps fight infection and returns extra fluid to the bloodstream.
What is the digestive system
The body system that breaks down food, absorbs nutrients, and removes waste.
What is the urinary system
The body system that removes liquid waste and helps balance water and chemicals in the body.
What is the reproductive system
The body system that allows humans to produce offspring.
What is the endocrine system
The body system made of glands that release hormones to control body processes.
What is the respiratory system
The body system that helps you breathe and brings oxygen into the body while removing carbon dioxide.
What is gross anatomy
The study of body structures that can be examined by the naked eye during dissection e.g bones.
What is systemic anatomy
All organs with related functions are studied together e.g digestive system
What is regional anatomy
All organs present in one body cavity are studied together e.g thoracic cavity
What is surface anatomy
The study of shapes and markings on the surface of the body that reveal underlying organs e.g the larynx
What is radiological imaging modalities
Ultrasound imaging Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) X- Ray
What are the points of reference for anatomical body positioning
Standing upright hands by side palms facing forward toes forward mouth closed
What is the sagittal plane
vertical plane that divides the body right and left
What is the coronal plane
vertical plane that divides the body into anterior(front/) and posterior(back)
what is the transverse plane
horizontal plane that divides the body into upper (superior) and lower (inferior) parts.
What is the parasagittal plane
para=near so its a plane that lies offset from the midline
What is the transverse plane
Horizontal plane that divides the body into superior(above) and inferior(below)
What is the axial region
forms main axis of the body (head, neck and trunk)
