#1
Front (Question)

What is DNA?

Back (Answer)

DNA is the instructions for building all proteins for an organism, it controls the cells functions etc.

#2
Front (Question)

What is DNA short for

Back (Answer)

DeoxyriboNucleic Acid

#3
Front (Question)

Describe the structure of a DNA (4 points)

Back (Answer)

It’s in a double helix shape. These strands which form the double helix are phosphate and ribose, which form the backbone of the DNA. It’s also made up of four building blocks, which come in pairs: A-T and C-G, these are a.k.a base pairs. There are many of these in a DNA structure

#4
Front (Question)

What do the bases do?

Back (Answer)

They instruct the sequence of amino acids in a protein, like an enzyme.

#5
Front (Question)

What is a gene?

Back (Answer)

A gene is a length of DNA which codes for a protein

#6
Front (Question)

What do the proteins in the gene do?

Back (Answer)

They control chemical reactions, growth, colouration and all inheritab;e characteristics e.g. hieght

#7
Front (Question)

How many bases code for one amino acid?

Back (Answer)

3 bases

#8
Front (Question)

What is a chromosome

Back (Answer)

A rod which comes in pairs (unless it’s a gamete) which carries DNA. It’s made up of DNA and histones

#9
Front (Question)

Where do the chromosomes come from?

Back (Answer)

One form father, one form mother. There’s a pair of genes in each nucleus, as genes controlling a specific characteristics are situated at the same point on each homogolous chromosome

#10
Front (Question)

How many chromosomes do humans have

Back (Answer)

23 pairs

#11
Front (Question)

What are 23 pairs of chromosomes referred to as

Back (Answer)

Diploid cells, haploid cells only contain 23

#12
Front (Question)

Which cells are haploid?

Back (Answer)

Gamete cells e.g. sperm and ovum

#13
Front (Question)

What is cell division by mitosis?

Back (Answer)

Two genetically identical daughter cells produced, involves on e division of a cell, it produces diploid cells acorss the body and keeps the same number of chromosomes in the cell. It occurs throughout a human.

#14
Front (Question)

What is cell division by meiosis?

Back (Answer)

Produces four non identical daughter cells, involves two cell divisions and produces haploid cells in humans. It’s only used to produce gametes.

#15
Front (Question)

What is variation

Back (Answer)

The difference between individuals from the same parents. It’s important for evolution to occur.

#16
Front (Question)

What are characteristics for variation

Back (Answer)

genetic, environmental or both or both

#17
Front (Question)

What is a mutation

Back (Answer)

A change in the DNA

#18
Front (Question)

What types of mutaitons can occur

Back (Answer)

Neutral (most common), most sequence mutations result in this. Negative effect (most chromosonial mutations) or positive.

#19
Front (Question)

What are mutagens

Back (Answer)

Chemicals which cause more frequent mutations, like antibiotics, UV or radioactivity
