Why are some properties of matter considered non-characteristic properties?
• Shared • General • cannot be used to uniquely identify a substance (because many different substances share that property)"
What makes a characteristic of matter considered a characteristic property?
• unique • specific
Give examples characteristic properties
• Boiling point • Melting point
Define Mass and give the units for mass and how is it measure?
Mass is the quantity (amount) of matter a substance contains and is measure with scale or balance -Kg -g
Define Volume
How much space that matter occupies
What are the units for volume?
cm3 or ml
Define temperature
Temperature indicates the quantity of heat or energy an object or matter contains
What are the units for temperature?
oC
What are the colors associated with Acidic, Basic and neutral solutions?
• Acidic = red • Basic = blue • Neutral = white
Name the universal Indicator of PH
Litmus paper
What are the 3 acidity possible?
• Acidic • Basic • Neutral
What is matter made of?
Matter is made of particles
What are the different states of Matter
• Solid • Liquid • Gas
Explain what happens to matter (for example, water) when it is placed in a container in its solid, liquid, and gaseous states.
• Solid: Keeps its own shape, fixed volume. • Liquid: Takes the shape of the container, fixed volume. • Gas: Fills the entire container, no fixed shape or volume.
Explain why a solid will keep its shape if placed in a container.
“The particles are tightly packed and only vibrate in place, so the matter will keep its shape regardless of the container. It will simply rest inside the container without adapting to its shape.”
Explain why in the liquid state, water has a fixed volume but no fixed shape.
The particles are less tightly packed and can move around each other. Therefore, liquid water will take the shape of the container while maintaining its volume. For example, if you pour water into a glass, it will fill the bottom and conform to the glass shape.
Does matter in the gaseous state have a fixed shape? Fixed volume?
It has neither a fixed shape nor a fixed volume. The particles are far apart and move freely in all direction. Gas will expand to completely fill the container, regardless of its size or shape. If the container is sealed, the vapor will spread evenly inside.
Give 2 types of energy?
• Light • Heat
What is required for a change of state (like solid to liquid or liquid to gas) to occur?
Energy must be added or removed, causing particles to move differently and change their arrangement.
What is the process called when particles in a solid change directly into a gas without becoming a liquid first?
Sublimation (comets, glaciers)
What is the change of state called when particles in a gas lose energy and become a solid without becoming a liquid first?
Deposition (frost)
What is the change of state called when particles in a liquid gain enough energy to become a gas?
Evaporation (steam in the shower)
What is the change of state called when particles in a gas lose energy and become a liquid?
Condensation (on the miror in the bathroom)
What is the change of state called when particles in a liquid lose energy and become a solid?
solidification (ice freezing)
