Give the formula for SA: Vol b) units? c) structure?
Volume (cm³) b) UNITS = none c) the number will be written as a ratio , with the volume ALWAYS being 1
as an object gets larger , the SA: Vol ratio becomes……….
as an object gets larger , the SA: Vol ratio becomes SMALLER
REQUIRED PRACTICAL: For the SA: Vol practical , different sized agar cubes were immersed in hydrochloric acid. These were then timed to see how long it would take for the pink cubes to become colourless. What results would you expect to find?
As the cubes become smaller , their SA: Vol ratio increases . This means that the rate of diffusion increases because the cube has A LARGER surface area for the acid to diffuse through and a SMALLER volume for the acid to reach the centre
Find the SA :Vol ratio of Cube A: 2 cm × 2 cm × 2 cm
Surface area = 4 × 6 = 24cm² Volume = 2 ×2 ×2 = 8cm³ ratio = 24 ÷ 8 = 3 ANSWER ——–> 3: 1
